Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.
— Camille Pissarro
Birthday to Camille Pissarro, one of my favourite impressionists - not entirely for his art, for there are those with more genius - but for his character : he was among the best of them, and while others (those more genius ones;) fought among themselves and had battles with everyone including themselves, Pissarro was a friend with and to them all, at the same time being the only one who, not affected by many quarrels, exhibited at all eight impressionist exhibitions.
The other reason that I love Camille is the fact that although he was older than most of them by whole decade Pissarro was not at all afraid of novelty; he embraced the younger generation turning into Post-Impressionist when he was already 54, becoming the father figure and friend to Seurat, Cezanne, Gauguin, Vincent and other Post Impressionists as well. Cézanne said about him He was a father for me. A man to consult and a little like the good Lord.
He was born on this day in 1830 on the island of St Thomas in what was then Danish West Indies and are now Virgin Islands.
Happy Birthday, Camille :)
