Birthday of Luca Giordano, Baroque Italian painter from Naples.
He was the son of a painter, born in 1634; in his teens he was an apprentice to the Spanish master Ribera, under whose strong influence he remained in his earlier works. Funnily, after a career in most important cities in Italy, Luca Giordano spent a decade in Spain himself.
Giordano had considerable skill and was known to have painted extremely quickly - which was the source of his nicknames Fulmine (the Thunderbolt) andPrometheus of painting; however, being so prolific he was later also said to be trader of all styles, and master of none.
This is his self portrait from around 1692.
